In 2020, amid the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, farms in Nyanya Gwandara, Nasarawa State, North Central Nigeria, faced a devastating blow as illegal miners invaded the area.
These miners brazenly destroyed mature crops, causing significant damage to local agriculture.
The destruction prompted an outcry, and the incident gained widespread attention after being documented by Samuel Vincent for the Nature Rescue Initiative (NRI). The production, which highlighted the illegal activities, caught the attention of Nigeria’s secret police, the Department of State Services (DSS). In response, the DSS intervened, helping to restore order and bring the situation under control.
