The Executive Secretary of the Nigeria’s National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Barr. Tony Ojukwu has called for humanitarian support from well-meaning Nigerians to support vulnerable groups in the country.

Mr. Ojukwu’s call was contained in a statement issued by Agharese Arase, Director of Corporate Affairs and External Linkages of the Commission and made available to DN News on Friday in commemoration of World Humanitarian Day 2023.

Justifying his call for increased humanitarian support, Mr. Ojukwu, Nigeria’s chief human right officer, observed that, the recent removal of fuel subsidy has compounded the Nigerian humanitarian crises as the policy have resulted in increased job losses depression, violent reactions and increased poverty.

He said the prevailing situation called for urgent intervention to address the attendant consequences of fuel subsidy removal.

He said providing humanitarian services can help create a world where justice reigns, respect for human dignity is upheld, the weak and vulnerable are strengthened, people are happy and conflicts will ultimately be reduced.

Mr. Ojukwu observed that the theme for the 2023 commemoration, “it takes a village,” underscores the collective responsibility of individuals, communities, and nations in safeguarding and promoting human rights, peace, and dignity for all.

He used the opportunity of this year’s commemoration to call on governments, civil society organizations, and individuals to work collaboratively in addressing issues such as poverty, conflict, displacement, and environmental degradation confronting the less privileged Nigerians.

He reiterated NHRC’s commitment to the values that bind the people of Nigeria together as a nation, recognizing that it is our collective responsibility to create a just and inclusive society where every individual’s rights are respected and upheld. Together, we can truly demonstrate that “It Takes a Village” to advance the course of humanity.

He used this medium to pay tributes to humanitarian heroes who lost their lives in providing selfless services to humanity all over the world.
