Nigeria’s National Human Rights Commission, has called for more funding supports from key government partners to enable its discharge its statutory responsibilities effective.
Briefing the media on activities lined up by commission to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), Nigeria’s Chief Human Rights Officer and the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Barr. Tony Ojukwu said the call was part of its planned high-level advocacy visits to the President, Bola Tinubu and other key stakeholders.
According to Ojukwu, the solicited funds will be used for the “promotion, protection and enforcement of human rights in the country as well as address emerging human rights challenges which the Commission contends with on a daily basis.”
In addition to the call for increased funding, Mr. Ojujwu said the Commission will use the visit to discuss the state of human rights in Nigeria and also present the National Action Plan recently approved by the Federal Executive Council, as a major policy agenda for the actualisation of human rights in Nigeria.
As part of it pre-human rights week activities, Mr. Ojukwu said the Commission will join other institutions to mark the 16 Days of Activism on Gender Based Violence.
Activities lined up for the week, include: Ordinary Session of the Governing Council of the National Human Rights Commission, National Town Hall on the Future of Litigating Human Rights in Nigeria, Correctional Centre Audit and Police Station Visitation, Human Rights Quiz Competition, Human Rights Film Festival, A High-Level Forum on Business and Human Rights, Civil Society Forum.
Other include Civil-Military Forum on Human Rights, Human Rights Walk and Statements, Human Rights Fiesta, and Human Rights Dinner and Award.
