The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday inaugurated its Constitution Review Committee to review the country’s 1999 Constitution.
The Deputy Senate President, Senator Jibrin Barau who doubles as the Committee chairman says the Committee has 24 months to conclude on its assignment.
He said the committee is poised to surpass the records of the previous committee as it seeks to innovate the process.

Speaking on the composition, the DSP said members were drawn from across the states based on their rank. He said, in the spirit of gender inclusiveness, all women in the Senate were drafted into the committee. Special preference was also given, Senator Ahmed Lawan and Senator Aminu Tambuwal because of their experiences as former Senate President and former Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Remarking on behalf of the Southeast, Senator Eyinanya Abaribe, urged the committee to prioritize timing to allow the Senate secure ascent to all amendments.
Senator Sani Musa who spoke on behalf of North Central said the committee should prioritize the issue of State Police.
Senator Tambuwal urged the committee to expand consultation to capture the voices of women, youths and Nigerians in diaspora.
The Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro who spoke on behalf of women, appealed to members of the committee to use the current amendment to give women a sense of political inclusion.
