The National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA) has announced the change of name to National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA).

A statement issued by Toyin Omozuwa, Press Secretary to the DG of the Agency on Wednesday says the name Change was because of the integration of the National Centre for Genetic Resources and Biotechnology (NACGRAB) into the Agency.

The move the statement also says is in line with with the Federal Government’s recent adoption of the Oronsaye’s report.

The agency observed that the renaming further reinforces its dedication to research, innovation, and cutting-edge biotechnological advancement. Adding that, under the forward-thinking leadership of Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha, NBRDA remains committed to advancing biotechnology for societal progress, addressing key challenges, and contributing to sustainable goals through innovative biotechnological solutions.

In 2011, President Goodluck Jonathan established the Presidential Committee on Restructuring and Rationalisation of Federal Government Parastatals, Commissions, and Agencies, with Mr. Steve Oronsaye as the Chairman.

The Oronsaye committee submitted its report in 2012. The report highlighted the existence of 541 Federal Government parastatals, commissions, and agencies, both statutory and non-statutory.

The 800-page report recommended the reduction of statutory agencies from 263 to 161, scrapping 38 agencies, merging 52, and reverting 14 to departments in different ministries.
