IWD 2024: 10th Senate pledges more support for Nigerian women

The Nigerian Senate on Thursday reiterated its commitment to supporting women’s development in Nigeria. 

Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, gave the commitment on behalf of his colleagues at a cake cutting event organised to celebrate the 2024 International Women’s Day in Abuja. 

The Senate suspended its business of the day to perform the all important function of honouring women. The were led by Senator Akpabio, President of the Senate.

Delivering his remark, Akpabio observed that as a Senate they will continue to support women through prayers and legislations. 

Senate Prayers for Women

He said the prayers of the 10th Senate was for God to grant women all over the world “good health. He also prayed for wisdom and sound mind with ample opportunities to contribute their quota towards building a peaceful society and national development.”

Emphasis the place of women in society, Akpabio reminded his colleagues that without the women, none of them would have existed let alone growing to become Senators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. 

Akpabio was flanked by his deputy, Senator Jibrin Barau, and the Senate Leader, Okpeyemi Bamidele.

Other Senators present were, Addul Ninge amongst other male senators and the only four female Senators in 10th Senate. The senators are Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan, Idiat Adebule, Ipalibo Harry Banigo and Ireti Kingibe.

International Women’s Day (IWD) celebrates the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also serves as a call to action for accelerating gender parity. The theme for this year is “invest in women, advance progress.”

The 10th Senate has 4 women out of 109 members. This number represents the lowest on the continent of Africa. It is hoped that this commitment will be reflected in the ongoing constitution alteration and the subsequent amendment of the Electoral Act
