The Deputy Spokesman of the House of Representatives, Hon. Philip Aggbese, is reported to have escaped from being killed in an assassination attempt.
Confirming the incident to the Daily Post, a media aide to Hon. Agbese, Mr. Lawrence Oduh, said the Federal lawmaker was attacked during a constituency outreach to commemorate the Easter Celebrations in Igumale, the headquarters of Ado local government where he hails from.
The swift intervention of “Operation Whirlwind” of the Nigerian Armed Forces operating in the area was said to have aborted the mission of the assassins.
The intervention by the military was also said to have led to the arrest of some of the assassins who are currently making useful statements.
According to Mr. Oduh the suspects allegedly fingered Ado Local Council Chairman, Hon. Agbese Charles Onazi and the Deputy Speaker of Benue State House of Assembly, Hon. (Mrs.) Lami Danladi Ogenyi as those behind the attack.
Mr. Onazi who told the journalist that contacted him that he was briefing the security adviser to the Benue State Governor on the matter did not return his calls as promised.
It could be recalled that the Benue State ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been enmeshed with crisis since Governor Hyacinth Alia took over the affairs of the State, with members of the National Assembly Caucus from the state at the forefront.
Agbese, who is the spokesperson of the caucus, was seen in December 2023, removing the portrait of Governor Alia from his office in the National Assembly, a move which did not go down well with the state government and some stakeholders of the party.
