Flooding: Northern Senators commemorate with Borno State, call for responsible use of relief funds

Northern Senators Forum has sympathized with the government and people of Borno State over the loss of lives and property occasioned by the ravaging flood that followed the collapse of Alau Dam.

The Forum says its “thoughts are with the families of the victims and those displaced by this devastating flood.”

A statement issued by Senator Abdullaziz Yar’Adua, chairman Forum on Thursday, commended the swift response of president Bola Tinubu led government.

According to Yari, Shettima’s visit to Borno is an indication of the government’s commitment to supporting affected communities.

They also commended President Tinubu for approving the 3 billion naira to states to address flooding and disaster relief support and call for judicious utilisation of the funds.

According to reports, the continous rainfall in Bama, Damboa and Gwoza local government area led to the collapse of the Alau Dam in Konduga local government area which was constructed in 1984–1986. 

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) says about 70 percent of Jere and Maiduguri has been affected by the flood.

On behalf of the Northern Senators Forum, I extend our deepest condolences to the people and government of Borno State over the loss of lives and property resulting from the collapse of the Alau Dam. Our thoughts are with the families of the victims and those displaced by this devastating flood.

We appreciate the prompt visit by Vice President Kashim Shettima to assess the situation and provide leadership during this challenging time. His swift response demonstrates the government’s commitment to supporting affected communities.

We also commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving 3 billion naira  for each state to address flood and disaster relief efforts. This timely intervention will go a long way in alleviating the suffering of affected citizens.

We urge all states to take responsibility and develop strategic plans to address climate change and prevent further environmental disasters. The Senate will continue to pursue legislation and policies that mitigate the effects of environmental disasters and promote sustainable development.

We stand in solidarity with the people of Borno State and assure them of our support during this difficult period.
