Senator Babangida canvasses support for victims, survivors of Jigawa tanker explosion

Senator Babangida Hussaini, Senator representing Jigawa North/West Senatorial district has appealed to well-meaning and spirited individuals in Nigeria and beyond to support families of victims and survivors of the Jigawa petrol tanker explosion.

Senator Babangida made the appeal on Wednesday while addressing online parliamentary Journalists in Abuja.

He said the incident occurred in Majia, Taura Local Government Area and so far, over a hundred fatality and 300 injuries have been recorded.

He emphasized the importance of raising awareness about the hazards of tanker explosions in Nigeria, urging the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation to educate the public on such incidents.

“I implore my colleagues, friends, and all well-wishers to extend their support to the victims. I am also personally contributing to aid those currently receiving treatment in hospitals,” he stated.

This call to action follows the resolutions passed by the Senate following Senator Babangida’s points raised during the plenary session and contributions from other senators.

The Senate has resolved to urge the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, as well as the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), to provide relief materials to the victims of the inferno.

Furthermore, they have called upon the National Orientation Agency and other relevant authorities to conduct thorough sensitization campaigns on the risks associated with engaging in such hazardous practices.

Additionally, the Senate urged all security agencies have been urged to enhance their responsiveness in the event of similar incidents across the country.

As highlighted by Senator Babangida, on the night of October 15, 2024, a fully loaded tanker carrying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) exploded along the Hadejia Expressway in Majia town, located in Taura Local Government of Jigawa State. This tragic event resulted in the loss of approximately 100 lives, with around 300 individuals sustaining severe burns and currently undergoing treatment in various medical facilities.

“It is evident that such incidents pose a significant threat, often leading to devastating consequences and overwhelming medical facilities in the vicinity.

Despite the recurring nature of these tragedies, there is a pressing need for public enlightenment and awareness campaigns to prevent future occurrences of such unfortunate incidents.”
