The National Population Commission (NPC) has received a significant boost in its advocacy for the upcoming Population and Housing Census.

This development came after the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Hon. Delu Bulus Yakubu, paid a courtesy visit to the NPC Chairman, Hon. Nasir Isa Kwarra, at the Commission’s Headquarters in Abuja.

The visit aimed to foster collaboration on data sharing and support the NPC’s advocacy for the census. By leveraging the census dataset, the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs can make informed decisions and allocate resources effectively.

The census dataset includes Enumeration Areas and building attributes, which are crucial for addressing poverty, improving social welfare, and responding to humanitarian crises in Nigeria. The successful conduct of the next census is vital for updating this critical dataset.

Hon. Kwarra emphasized the importance of the census for national development, stating that it will provide accurate and up-to-date information for effective governance, planning, and service delivery across all sectors of the economy.

The visit is a testament to the growing support for the NPC’s advocacy efforts. Recently, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Sen. George Akume, assured the NPC of the Federal Government’s commitment to the successful conduct of the census ¹.

Sen. Akume commended the NPC for its progress in preparations for the census and urged the Commission to continue working hard to ensure a free, fair, and credible exercise.

The NPC has made significant progress in its preparations, including the completion of the Enumeration Area Demarcation (EAD) and geospatial resources generated from the exercise.

The Commission has also conducted census pretests and trial census, mapped and identified special population groups, and recruited and trained census personnel.

As the NPC continues to advocate for the next census, it is clear that the Commission’s efforts are gaining momentum, with key stakeholders expressing their support for the exercise.
