Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has voiced concerns over the proposed tax reform bills in Northern Nigeria.
In an interview with BBC Hausa, Zulum expressed that the tax reform bills could lead to backwardness in the North.
The governor added that the bills would have a negative impact not only in Northern Nigeria but across the country.
Zulum specifically mentioned that Lagos State would be the only region to benefit from President Bola Tinubu’s tax reforms.
He stated that while Lagos may benefit, the rest of Nigeria, particularly the North, would face serious challenges.
The governor’s concerns highlight the potential adverse effects the reform could have on the economic growth of various regions.
He further explained that states such as Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, and Ondo would also experience difficulties from these reforms.
Zulum emphasized that the reforms would likely harm both Northern and Southern regions outside of Lagos.
Despite the proposed reform’s nationwide impact, Zulum stressed that it would only bring progress for Lagos, leaving others disadvantaged.
He urged President Bola Tinubu to reconsider these tax reforms in light of the current national situation.
The governor reminded the president that the North had contributed a significant 60% of votes to his election victory.
Zulum advised the president to ignore misleading claims that the northern population does not support his administration.
In conclusion, Governor Zulum called for the withdrawal of the tax reform bills to protect the interests of all regions.
