The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has successfully uncovered a significant stockpile of counterfeit medicines following a raid at Tyre Village, Trade Fair Complex, Lagos State.
The operation, carried out by NAFDAC’s Investigation & Enforcement team, led to the seizure of counterfeit pharmaceuticals, including Amoxicillin 500mg, Ampiclox 500mg capsules, and packaging materials for Augmentin capsules 625mg.
The total value of the seized products is estimated at over ₦300 million. These counterfeit drugs, which are widely circulated in the market, pose severe health risks to consumers. Health experts warn that the fake medicines may cause treatment failures, organ damage, and even potential carcinogenic effects due to their unknown and dangerous chemical compositions.
The facility where the illegal drugs were found has been placed under hold, and all counterfeit products have been evacuated. NAFDAC has also invited the suspect for questioning, as further investigations into the illicit operation continue.
In a statement, NAFDAC urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest NAFDAC office. The agency reiterated its commitment to combating the circulation of fake medicines and ensuring the safety and well-being of Nigerians.
NAFDAC’s recent efforts underscore the growing concern over the increasing prevalence of counterfeit drugs in the country, a problem that has been linked to numerous health complications and deaths. The agency continues to warn consumers to only purchase medicines from authorized and licensed outlets to avoid falling victim to these dangerous products.
