The Director General of the National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA), Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha, has once again emphasized the agency’s dedication to enhancing food security in Nigeria, in line with President Bola Tinubu’s eight-point agenda.

Speaking on Thursday during a visit from the Islamic Green Club and Empowerment Initiative, a faith-based organization advocating for sustainable agricultural practices, Mustapha expressed his gratitude for the delegation’s visit and reiterated NBRDA’s role in advancing food security through biotechnology.

“Biotechnology is key to improving food production in Nigeria, and we remain fully committed to promoting sustainable solutions,” said Mustapha, highlighting the successes of genetically modified crops such as the world’s first genetically modified Pod Borer Resistant (PBR) cowpea, which has drastically transformed Nigeria’s food production landscape.

He also pointed to the significant impact of Bt Cotton, which has empowered farmers and contributed to economic growth. “The commercialization of Bt Cotton is not only boosting our cotton industry but is also a driver of economic transformation for local farmers,” he noted.

Addressing public concerns surrounding genetically modified organisms (GMOs), Mustapha assured that such technologies are safe and effective. “Farmers should have no fear regarding biotech crops,” he said. “The success of Bt Cowpea, Bt Cotton, and Tela Maize is proof of their safety and effectiveness in improving agricultural yields.”

Mustapha expressed optimism that the visit from the Islamic Green Club would mark a new phase of advocacy, where biotechnology would play a crucial role in Nigeria’s socioeconomic development.

Hajiya Bola Usman, President of the Islamic Green Club and Empowerment Initiative, also spoke at the event, stressing the importance of sustainable agricultural practices and the role of biotechnology in tackling climate change and food insecurity. She commended NBRDA for its efforts in raising awareness about biotechnology and its benefits, especially in rural communities.

Usman, who congratulated Mustapha on his reappointment, urged policymakers to adopt a balanced approach when it comes to GMOs. “While I may not be an expert in research, I appeal for a cautious, yet open-minded approach to biotechnology,” she said. “We must focus on innovative solutions to address issues like soil degradation and food scarcity, and avoid misconceptions that hinder progress.”

The meeting highlighted a shared vision for a sustainable agricultural future in Nigeria, with both NBRDA and the Islamic Green Club committed to advancing food security through innovative and responsible agricultural practices.
