Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, has accused political undertakers of undermining President Bola Tinubu’s efforts and leadership.
During an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today, Ndume voiced concerns about the harm caused to Tinubu by political manipulation.
Despite protests from Ndume and Senator Abdul Ningi, the Senate passed the tax reform bills for a second reading.
Ndume argued that political undertakers were damaging the President’s reputation, despite his positive achievements over the past two years.
He stated that President Tinubu had made meaningful progress, but these accomplishments were being overshadowed by controversial policies.
The Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB), a major milestone in Nigeria’s democracy, was highlighted by Ndume as a key achievement.
Ndume recalled the PIB’s long passage, stressing that it took years to pass, unlike the rushed tax reform bills.
He emphasized that while reforms were needed, they must be introduced at the right time, with proper prioritization.
Ndume clarified that he wasn’t opposed to the bill but believed the timing was wrong, given Nigeria’s economic struggles.
He noted the widespread hunger in the country, particularly affecting his constituents, and questioned the bill’s introduction under these conditions.
Ndume urged a delay in the bill, advocating for further consultation rather than discarding it entirely, to ensure wider input.
He referred to the concerns expressed by governors, the National Economic Council, and others who called for more discussion before moving forward.
The senator expressed skepticism about the urgency of the bill, calling for a more careful and inclusive approach to policy.
His comments reflected a sense of duty to represent his constituents and ensure that policies align with the country’s needs.
