The National Population Commission (NPC) has strongly refuted misleading online reports suggesting that the Chairman, Hon. Nasir Isa Kwarra, announced the next Population and Housing Census will take place in 2025.
In a statement released today, the NPC clarified that no official census date has been set and emphasized that the Chairman’s comments were misinterpreted.
The confusion stems from a recent media interaction during the 30th Anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Abuja, where Kwarra highlighted the critical issue of data gaps affecting Nigeria’s health services. He expressed optimism that President Tinubu would soon issue a proclamation setting the date, but no specific year or date was given.
The NPC reminded the public that while it plays a key role in preparing for the census, the authority to announce the census date lies solely with the President. The Commission is in ongoing discussions with the presidency to determine an appropriate timeline following the previous administration’s postponement of the census.
The NPC urged the public and media outlets to avoid spreading unverified claims and to rely on official sources for updates.
