Inspector-General of Police Extends Condolences, Pledges Swift Action on Waterways Safety
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has expressed his heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Kogi State following a devastating boat mishap that occurred on November 29, 2024, along the Dambo-Ebuchi waterways of the River Niger in Kupa Local Government Area.
The tragic incident, which involved over 160 passengers, resulted in the rescue of 24 individuals, with several others still unaccounted for. The IGP has directed the Force Marine Officer to spearhead a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the mishap, with the aim of identifying contributing factors and developing preventive measures for future incidents on the nation’s waterways.
In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, IGP Egbetokun assured the people of Kogi State and all Nigerians of the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to a swift and coordinated rescue operation. Search and rescue efforts are currently underway, with resources and operational support activated to locate the missing passengers.
The IGP also urged waterway operators, boat owners, and other stakeholders to collaborate with the Force Marine Department in implementing and enforcing critical safety protocols to protect passengers and operators on Nigeria’s waterways.
“We remain steadfast in enhancing safety measures, ensuring justice for the victims, and reducing future risks through strengthened collaboration and proactive steps,” the IGP stated.
The investigation into the tragic boat mishap is expected to provide valuable insights into improving the safety and emergency response systems for water transport across the country.
The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its unwavering dedication to safeguarding the lives of citizens and preventing similar incidents in the future.
