Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has revealed that certain individuals are benefiting from the ongoing insurgency in the region, impeding efforts to end the crisis.
In an exclusive interview with Channels Television on Sunday, Governor Zulum stated that the sponsors of the insurgency have no interest in bringing peace to the state, as they are profiting from the prolonged conflict. He explained that the beneficiaries are not only in Borno but are spread across the country, spanning various sectors of society, including both civilians and military personnel.
“We still have people who don’t want to see the end of this crisis. They are benefiting from it, not only civilians; it cuts across all strata,” Zulum said. He noted that several informants have been arrested within local communities, and some military personnel have been caught attempting to supply ammunition to the insurgents.
Zulum also pointed to the significant foreign interference fueling the insurgency, with foreign actors aiding the terrorists’ activities. He highlighted the vulnerability of the region’s borders, particularly around Lake Chad and the Sambisa game reserve, which have become safe havens for insurgent groups.
“The porosity of our borders and the fringes of Lake Chad make it easier for terrorists to thrive,” Zulum explained. The governor’s comments underscore the complex and multifaceted challenges faced in the fight against insurgency in the northeast, complicating efforts to restore peace and stability to Borno State and beyond.
