Police Reject Amnesty International’s Allegations on #EndBadGovernance Protests, Orders Investigation

The Nigeria Police Force has responded to Amnesty International’s recent report about the #EndBadGovernance protests, which criticized police actions.

The report alleges police responsibility for deaths and arrests, as well as the use of excessive force. Police Spokesman ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi issued a statement refuting these claims as false, misleading, and inconsistent with incident reports. According to the police, the protests were handled in full compliance with established rules of engagement and guidelines.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, had given clear orders for officers to avoid using arms during protests. Weapons were only authorized for use when protests escalated into riots, leading to loss of life or property damage. Special armed units were tasked with restoring order when required, following strict guidelines to avoid unnecessary harm. The police force also documented and shared multiple unpalatable incidents during the protests to provide transparency.

One incident involved Boko Haram/ISWAP operatives who infiltrated a protest in Borno State, resulting in fatalities and injuries. The police clarified that the seven deaths recorded during the protests were not caused by police actions but by other criminal acts. Another incident saw an unregistered vehicle crash into protesters, causing additional fatalities. The force emphasized that these tragic events were beyond their control.

In several states, protesters displayed foreign flags and destroyed public property, prompting police intervention to ensure public safety. The use of tear gas was justified as a necessary and globally recognized crowd control measure to avoid escalation. The police force stressed that live ammunition was never used during the protests, and no protesters were killed by officers. Arrests targeted individuals committing crimes such as vandalism, treason, and arson, in line with legal procedures.

In a move toward reconciliation, the Federal Government pardoned those arrested, reinforcing the commitment to national unity. Following Amnesty International’s allegations, IGP Egbetokun ordered an investigation into the claims, directing a report within one week. The investigation aims to ensure adherence to the Standard Operating Procedures and identify any deviations by the police or other security agencies.

The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the rights of all citizens, ensuring the rule of law. It promised to improve its operational standards based on constructive feedback, maintaining professionalism and accountability in all its actions.
