In a major operation, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered a counterfeit liquor ring.
The raid, which took place in the Oke Arin market, Lagos Island, exposed a makeshift factory producing fake alcoholic beverages. Three men were arrested during the operation, with a variety of counterfeit alcoholic drinks, empty bottles, and packaging materials seized. The value of the seized products exceeded ₦180 million, including fake versions of well-known liquor brands.
The main suspect, Mr. Tochukwu Henry, was apprehended during the raid. He confessed to refilling premium alcohol bottles with cheaper ST-Rémy contents, masquerading as Rémy Martin. Henry revealed that he employed two accomplices who assisted him in the illegal production process. The counterfeit operation had been running for some time before authorities acted on the tip-off.
NAFDAC officials emphasized the dangers of consuming such counterfeit products, which could harm public health. The agency warned consumers to stay vigilant, especially with the festive season approaching, when alcohol consumption typically increases. The illegal operation posed a significant risk to both unsuspecting consumers and legitimate businesses in the alcohol industry.
The suspects are currently in NAFDAC custody, awaiting further investigation. NAFDAC has assured the public that it will continue to combat illegal activities that compromise public health. The agency urged Nigerians to report any suspicious activities or counterfeit products to the nearest NAFDAC office. This raid highlights the ongoing efforts by NAFDAC to protect consumers from harmful and illegal products entering the market. Authorities are committed to ensuring the safety of food and beverages across the country.
