The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has reiterated its ban on importing frozen foods.
This includes chicken, turkey, and catfish, which the agency insists should not be sold or distributed. The agency emphasized the Federal Government’s policy to support local farmers and producers through the promotion of homegrown products. NAFDAC made this reminder during a sensitization program held at the Kado Fish Market in Abuja on Tuesday. The programme was organised specifically for frozen food sellers to ensure compliance with government regulations.
Mr. Kenneth Azikiwe, NAFDAC’s FCT Director, addressed the traders, urging them to strictly adhere to safety and storage guidelines. He highlighted that maintaining the safety and quality of frozen foods was essential for public health. Additionally, Azikiwe emphasized the need for traders to prioritise locally produced and NAFDAC-registered goods in their businesses. He encouraged vendors to support the country’s agricultural sector by purchasing products from local farmers.
During the event, Alhaji Ibrahim Mohammed, Chairman of the Abuja Fish and Frozen Food Sellers Association, assured NAFDAC of full compliance. He promised that association members would follow the guidelines strictly and adhere to all regulations. Mohammed also called on NAFDAC to enforce the ban fairly across all sectors. He requested that any enforcement measures be applied uniformly to avoid any form of bias or unfair treatment.
NAFDAC’s sensitisation efforts aim to ensure that consumers receive safe, high-quality food products, while boosting local agricultural production. The agency continues to advocate for policies that benefit local farmers and improve public health across Nigeria.
