Nigeria Police Dismiss Allegations of IGP’s Involvement in Smuggling Cartel

The Nigeria Police Force has strongly rejected recent allegations linking IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun to a smuggling cartel.

These allegations, circulated in media outlets, were described as baseless and part of an attempt to tarnish his reputation.

The incident involved officers at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, who misappropriated funds seized during an illegal arrest.

The arrested individual, Andrew Ejah, was detained by officers, who falsely reported the recovered sum as ₦31,790,000.

The officers, including DSP Peter Ejike and Inspector Esther Okafor, demanded a bribe to suppress the case and investigations.

A thorough investigation uncovered that the officers had stolen ₦43,160,000 and attempted to cover up their criminal activities.

Forensic evidence revealed that they falsified documents, tampered with exhibits, and even spread false rumors to mislead the public.

The officers were suspended and face prosecution for criminal conspiracy, theft, and abuse of office, among other charges.

The Nigeria Police emphasized that the false narrative was intentionally spread by individuals attempting to deflect attention from the officers’ crimes.

Police authorities have urged the public and media to avoid spreading misinformation that undermines public trust in the force.

The Nigeria Police Force continues to prioritize reform efforts to eliminate corruption and misconduct within its ranks.
