The Senate has rejected claims that the its withdrew the 2024 Tax Reform Bills.
A statement issued by the Media Directorate of the office of the Leader of the Senate, Okpeyemi Bamidele, quoted the leader as clarifying that the Senate did not suspend or withdraw deliberations on the Tax Reform Bills as reported.
Bamidele in the statement emphasized that such misrepresentations misled the public about the Senate’s position regarding the ongoing tax reform discussions.
He stressed that the legislative process was ongoing, with no intention to withdraw or halt the bills.
Bamidele explained that the bills, sponsored by the executive, were not private member bills and could not be withdrawn.
The Senate Leader highlighted that any attempt to mislead the public would undermine the democratic process and legislative integrity.
He also warned against external efforts to intimidate or distract the Senate from carrying out its constitutional duties.
Bamidele clarified that the Senate had set up a special committee to resolve any grey areas surrounding the bills.
He reiterated that the bills remained alive in the Senate, undergoing thorough consideration and engagement from all relevant parties.
The Senate Leader emphasized the importance of following the constitution and Senate rules during deliberations on national issues.
