IGP Alerts: Nigeria’s Justice System Critical, Calls for Reformation

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, recently compared Nigeria’s justice system to a sick patient requiring urgent medical attention.

Speaking at the 2024 Annual Lecture/Award Ceremony, organized by the Crime Reporters Association of Nigeria (CRAN), the IGP called for a comprehensive national effort to address the weaknesses within the system. He explained that, just as a doctor diagnoses and treats a sick person, Nigeria’s criminal justice system also needs revitalization and reform to function effectively.

In his address, the IGP urged Nigerians to refrain from placing the blame solely on the police for the country’s justice system failures. He emphasized that the police are only one pillar in a much broader system that involves multiple stakeholders. Despite acknowledging the challenges the police face, the IGP reassured the public that law enforcement agencies are committed to making improvements. He further highlighted the importance of collaboration across all sectors to ensure a fair and efficient justice system.

The IGP pointed out that a well-functioning justice system would positively affect all citizens, including law enforcement officers. He stressed that the benefits of a reformed justice system would not only impact those within the system but also enhance public safety and overall societal wellbeing. The IGP was represented at the event by ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, who echoed these sentiments and emphasized the need for collective action and national support to achieve meaningful reform in the justice sector.
