The Deputy Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, George Ibezimako Ozodinobi (LP, Anambra), has predicted that the lawmakers who recently defected from the Labour Party (LP) will regret their decision.
Following the announcement of the defections, Ozodinobi took the floor to express his disappointment, likening the situation to a biblical passage.
“I will quote the Bible. When Jesus was carrying the cross to Calvary, the woman Veronica wept, and Jesus looked back, telling the women not to weep for him, but for themselves,” Ozodinobi said. “I am telling those who have defected that they will continue weeping for themselves because where you have crossed over to, you don’t have a future.”
Ozodinobi’s remarks followed the defection of four LP members—Chinedu Okere (Owerri Municipal/Owerri North/Owerri West), Mathew Donatus (Kaura, Kaduna), Akiba Bassey (Calabar Municipal/Odukpani), and Esosa Iyawe (Oredo, Edo)—who cited internal wrangling within the party as the reason for their departure. The Labour Party leadership condemned the move, calling it irrational and inconsistent with democratic values, while vowing to take legal action to reclaim their mandates and challenge the defections.
