NAFDAC has issued a stern warning to bakeries using harmful additives like saccharin and bromate in bread production.
The agency emphasized that bakeries found using these substances would face severe consequences, including immediate shutdowns.
Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, NAFDAC’s Director-General, confirmed the agency’s commitment to enforcing regulations in the food industry for public safety. She stressed that the agency’s post-marketing surveillance plays a crucial role in detecting violations and ensuring product quality.
“We routinely inspect products and act on consumer complaints, shutting down bakeries using bromate in their bread production,” Adeyeye stated. She added that many water-producing factories had also been shut down for substandard production and unhygienic practices.
Post-marketing surveillance is a critical part of NAFDAC’s approach to maintaining high standards in the market, according to Adeyeye. It ensures that products in the market match those approved during the registration process and continue to meet safety regulations.
The regulatory body emphasized that consistent monitoring helps prevent deviations in production processes that could compromise consumer health and safety. Adeyeye further explained that some companies attempt to change production methods after product registration, which the agency actively prevents.
