The Nigerian government has confirmed there is no evidence of the new COVID variant XEC in the country.
The variant, first reported in Australia, has spread to 29 countries, raising concerns due to its increased virulence.
The Ministry of Health issued a statement urging Nigerians not to panic but continue observing personal hygiene practices.
Deputy Director Alabi Balogun stated that the government had taken measures like establishing molecular labs and isolation centres.
Balogun also emphasized the importance of regular handwashing and other hygiene practices to prevent potential spread of the virus.
The newly detected COVID variant XEC has caused concerns due to its spread across multiple countries globally.
Despite its global spread, there is no evidence suggesting the variant has reached Nigeria or affected the population.
The federal government has heightened surveillance at all entry points to prevent the introduction of the new variant.
To ensure preparedness, Nigerian tertiary hospitals have received upgrades, including new molecular laboratories and ventilator-equipped intensive care units.
Health officials urged the public to disregard misinformation regarding the resurgence of COVID-19 in Nigeria amid these developments.
