Key stakeholders today met to discuss improving birth registration in Nigeria, led by Dr. Osifo Tellson Ojogun of National Population Commission (NPC).
The meeting focused on the “Partnership Compact on Decentralization and Localization of Birth Registration and Legal Identity” in Nigeria.
Attendees included UNICEF, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), and other important partners committed to enhancing birth registration access.
The partnership aims to create a decentralized birth registration system, ensuring services are available in every ward and community.
Awareness campaigns will educate Nigerians on the significance of birth registration and the legal identity it provides.
Technology will be leveraged to streamline registration processes, improving efficiency and expanding access across the country.
Traditional and religious leaders will be key in encouraging community participation in the birth registration process.
Dr. Osifo emphasized that birth registration is a fundamental human right and essential for an effective civil registration system.
A birth certificate grants access to education, healthcare, social services, legal protection, and helps shape national development.
The NPC is committed to strengthening its capacity, advocating for supportive policies, and mobilizing resources for this vital initiative.
Dr. Osifo was accompanied by key officials from the NPC, including Barr. Mrs. Chioma Umeh-Kalu and Mr. Ademola Towobola.
