In Zamfara State, over 1,500 members have defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), All Progress Grand Alliance (APGA), and Young Peoples Party (YPP).
The defectors joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), signaling a major shift in the state’s political landscape.
Rep. Aminu Jaji, representing Birnin Magaji/Kaura Namoda Federal Constituency, welcomed the defectors on Monday, in a public ceremony. Jaji was represented by Alhaji Isiyaka Ajiya-Anka, the State Chairman of the APC Jajiyyaa Group, during the event.
The defectors included leaders and supporters from various political parties, including the PDP, APGA, YPP, and others. According to Jaji’s representative, this mass defection is a positive development for the APC in the state.
Ajiya-Anka assured the decampees that they would be treated fairly, fostering good working relationships within the APC. He expressed confidence that the defection of key political figures would significantly strengthen the party’s position in Zamfara.
Prominent defectors included former APGA Chairman Alhaji Rabi’u Salisu-Bature, who brought with him hundreds of APGA members. The state YPP Chairman, Alhaji Sani Anka, and his supporters also joined APC, further bolstering the party’s ranks in the state.
Other notable defectors were PDP leaders, including Alhaji Nasiru Yusuf, a former Director-General from Shinkafi LGA, and Malam Ibrahim Tado. PDP’s Women Leader from Shinkafi LGA, Hajiya Abu Alasan, and Youth Leader Lukman Hamidu also switched allegiance to the APC.
The influx of defectors from multiple political parties has raised expectations that the APC will gain greater influence in the region.
