Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA) was temporarily closed on Wednesday following a crash-landing by an Allied Air cargo plane.
The incident occurred when one of the aircraft’s landing gears failed during its approach for landing. The aircraft, which was carrying six crew members, managed to avoid casualties in the crash landing. Emergency responders swiftly evacuated the crew, and no injuries have been reported, according to authorities. The crew members were promptly taken to the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) medical unit for evaluation.
The crash site was quickly cordoned off by emergency teams, with military personnel overseeing the operation to secure the area. This led to the temporary closure of NAIA’s runway, causing significant disruptions to flights scheduled for departure or arrival. Passengers were advised to check with their airlines for updated flight statuses. Authorities have confirmed that inbound and outbound flights have been delayed due to the closure.
The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and airport authorities are working together to clear the disabled aircraft from the runway. Investigations are also underway to assess any potential damage to the runway and ensure that it is safe for future flights. Airport officials are focused on restoring normal operations as soon as possible.
Security expert Zagazola Makama, who shared the details of the incident on X, praised the swift response of emergency services. He assured the public that further updates will be provided as investigations into the cause of the landing gear failure continue. Authorities are committed to resolving the situation and resuming airport operations without further delay.
