The Arewa Youths Integrity Network (AYIN) has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of favouring the Yoruba ethnic group.
The group expressed disappointment in the president’s recent appointment of Mr. Shamseldeen Babatunde Ogunjimi as Acting Accountant General.
AYIN condemned the appointment, emphasizing that it disregarded other ethnic groups in Nigeria, particularly those from the northern region. They specifically criticized the president for appointing Ogunjimi, a Yoruba man, to this critical government position.
According to AYIN, the move reflects favoritism towards the Yoruba, ignoring qualified individuals from other regions of Nigeria. The group believes the northern region deserves better representation in key government roles. AYIN’s spokesperson, Barr. James Ismaila, called the appointment a disservice to the north, especially as other Yoruba hold prominent positions. He emphasized that northerners are equally qualified for high-level roles and should not be overlooked.
In their statement, the group expressed concern over the continued dominance of Yoruba appointments in the government. AYIN argued that the president must promote national unity by offering positions based on merit, not ethnic origin. The group highlighted that the appointment came shortly before the retirement of Dr. Oluwatoyin Sakirat Madein. AYIN’s statement also reminded the president of their support for him during the 2023 election, despite regional pressures for a northern candidate.
Finally, AYIN urged President Tinubu to uphold fairness, justice, and inclusion for all ethnic groups in his administration. They warned that continued favoritism would undermine national unity and hinder the country’s progress. The group reiterated that Nigeria belongs to all tribes, not just one, and expects leadership that reflects this inclusivity.
