The five-day UNESCO Bioethics Training Programme concluded successfully in Abuja, enhancing the capacity of NABEC (National Bioethics Committee) members.
Organized by the Federal Government and UNESCO, the training aimed to boost ethical governance and bioethical decision-making in Nigeria.
Earlier, before the completion of the training, the Director General of the National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA) and Chairman of the National Bioethics Committee (NABEC), Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha, led a delegation of committee members on a courtesy visit to the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, on Thursday.
The visit also included the Chief of Bioethics from UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, Dr. Dafna Feinholz, along with a resource team participating in the ongoing NABEC training.
NABEC, inaugurated in April 2023, advises the government on bioethical issues to ensure safety and well-being.
A statement issued by the NBRDA on Sunday revealed that the training equipped NABEC members with the tools needed to address complex bioethical challenges facing Nigerian society today.
The training also provided participants with practical knowledge on handling bioethical issues related to human rights, medical advancements, and environmental concerns.
This will enable NABEC to offer better guidance and support to the government in formulating policies that align with ethical standards and protect citizens’ well-being.
With this successful training, NABEC members are now better positioned to fulfill their mandate and support ethical governance in Nigeria.
