President Bola Tinubu has called on West African leaders to adopt Ghana’s recent peaceful elections as a model for democracy.
The statement, issued by his special adviser on information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga, praised Ghana’s peaceful elections on December 7.
Tinubu emphasized that Ghana’s successful election process set a high standard for the region and beyond for democratic maturity.
He urged leaders across West Africa to prioritize national unity to ensure political stability and peaceful transitions in future elections.
Onanuga highlighted Tinubu’s commendation of Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia and the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) for their timely concession.
Tinubu praised the NPP for conceding defeat before the official results were announced, demonstrating political maturity and respect for the people.
He noted that this act of concession mirrored Nigeria’s democratic progress in 2015, strengthening the region’s democratic values.
The president also praised President Akufo-Addo for his leadership as chair of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Tinubu referred to Akufo-Addo as a “formidable Pan-Africanist” for his efforts in strengthening regional stability and peacekeeping efforts.
Additionally, he congratulated Ghana’s foreign minister, Shirley Botchwey, on her appointment as Commonwealth Secretary-General, recognizing her significant achievement.
Tinubu’s statement, as relayed by Onanuga, highlighted the importance of peace, prosperity, and economic integration within the ECOWAS region.
He urged regional leaders to recommit to the founding ideals of ECOWAS, emphasizing peaceful elections and democratic practices across Africa.
