Bako Wurgi, a notorious bandit leader linked to the murder of the Emir of Gobir, has been arrested.
Wurgi is accused of masterminding the abduction and subsequent murder of the Emir of Gobir, Isa Bawa, in Sokoto state.
In July, Bawa was abducted by suspected bandits at the Kwanar Maharba area while returning from an event.
After being held captive for three weeks, the traditional ruler was killed by the bandits.
A viral video surfaced, showing Bawa pleading with the state government to pay the ransom demanded by his captors for his release.
The breakthrough in Wurgi’s capture came on December 14, following intelligence reports that he was receiving medical treatment at a hospital in Shinkafi town, Zamfara state.
Wurgi had reportedly sustained injuries during a violent clash with a rival bandit group.
Troops swiftly moved to the hospital, where they discovered Wurgi, who was being treated for multiple cuts and gunshot wounds.
His arrest marks a significant step in combating the banditry crisis in the region.
Authorities are hopeful that this arrest will lead to further breakthroughs in dismantling criminal networks operating in the northwest.
