The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved €161 million for the construction and upgrade of substations across Nigeria.

The funding will enhance the country’s power infrastructure under the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI).

The initiative aims to increase Nigeria’s electricity supply by upgrading 14 substations and establishing 21 new ones nationwide.

The approved projects will help achieve an operational capacity of 12,000 megawatts in the coming years.

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, confirmed the approval during a briefing in Abuja after the council’s meeting.

He emphasized the importance of these upgrades in stabilizing Nigeria’s power transmission network.

Key locations for the new substations include Onitsha, Abeokuta, and Sokoto, which will improve national power distribution.

The project aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s promise to enhance the country’s power capacity and supply reliability.

Adelabu added that the contract approval is part of phase one of the Siemens project, which will boost transmission.

Phase one includes five critical substations that will be upgraded, such as those in Onitsha and Abeokuta.

The upgrades will focus on increasing power distribution to meet rising demand, ensuring better service to Nigerians.

The minister also highlighted the strategic importance of these investments in advancing the nation’s electricity sector.
