The United Kingdom’s Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch has shared a troubling encounter with the Nigerian Police.
In a recent interview, she revealed that officers stole her brother’s watch and shoes during their interaction.
Badenoch, born to Nigerian Yoruba parents, grew up in Nigeria before moving to the UK at age 16.
The interview, conducted by The Free Press, a US-based media outlet, highlighted the stark contrast between her experiences with police in Nigeria and the UK.
Badenoch criticized the Nigerian Police, stating that giving officers guns only serves to intimidate citizens.
“The police in Nigeria will rob us,” she said, emphasizing the negative impact of armed officers on the public.
Badenoch also reflected on a more positive experience with British police, recalling a burglary in the UK in 2004.
She praised the swift and helpful response from the officers, contrasting it with her experiences in Nigeria.
Her comments have sparked attention, particularly in Nigeria, where she has faced criticism from officials like Vice-President Kashim Shettima.
Despite the backlash, Badenoch has continued to advocate for fair and accountable policing worldwide.
