The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) says it has shut down 150 shops at Eziukwu Market in Aba, Abia State, after uncovering a massive haul of counterfeit and expired goods.

The seized goods, valued at ₦5 billion, included beverages, carbonated drinks, wines, spirits, vegetable oils, noodles, powdered milk, and yoghurt.

The development was contained in a statement issued by NAFDAC, revealing the results of a two-day operation conducted on December 16 and 17, 2024. The agency’s findings exposed the market as a major hub for the illegal production and sale of substandard products. These goods were being sold to consumers without regard for public health, posing serious risks. NAFDAC’s South-East Zone Director, Dr. Martins Iluyomade, expressed deep concern over the market’s continued illegal activities, despite a commitment made by market leaders in December 2023 to expose counterfeiters.

NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, reaffirmed the agency’s zero-tolerance policy toward counterfeit products. She emphasized that NAFDAC would continue to take strong measures to protect the public and ensure that only safe products are available in the market. She also assured Nigerians that the agency is committed to finding a permanent solution to the issue of fake goods.

The shutdown and seizure of counterfeit products are part of NAFDAC’s broader efforts to protect public health. The agency continues to warn traders and consumers about the dangers of purchasing substandard goods.
