The Nigeria Police Force has responded to allegations of inhumane treatment following the arrest of Vincent Makinde, a dismissed officer who was recently apprehended while impersonating an Assistant Superintendent of Police.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by Police Spokesman ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force clarified that the use of leg restraints on Makinde was a necessary precaution, given his violent resistance during arrest and his previous escape from lawful custody.
Makinde, who had been dismissed from the police in 2022 after a thorough investigation and orderly room trial for various offences, resurfaced in June 2024. He was found to be fraudulently parading himself as an active police officer, despite not having been reinstated or promoted. He was also armed with a rifle at the time of his arrest.
According to the statement, Makinde resisted arrest aggressively and attempted to evade capture once again. Given his prior violent escape and the danger he posed, the police officers on duty deemed it essential to employ leg restraints to ensure his safety and prevent further violence. The police emphasized that the use of restraint devices is standard practice globally, especially when individuals resist lawful detention in an aggravated manner.
The statement further highlighted that Makinde’s behavior posed a significant risk not only to the officers but also to public safety, making the use of such measures necessary under the circumstances. In his statement, ACP Adejobi assured the public that the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to upholding transparency and accountability.
He reiterated that thorough investigations are being conducted into all aspects of the case, and the Force is dedicated to maintaining public trust by ensuring that officers who violate the law are held accountable. Makinde remains in custody, awaiting prosecution for impersonation, assault, and other serious offences.
