Senator Adamu Aliero, representing Kebbi Central Senatorial District has revealed that the 2025 budget could be passed by late January or early February 2025.
Aliero made this statement during an interview with members of the National Assembly New Media Forum following President Bola Tinubu’s 2025 budget presentation on Wednesday.
He explained that the budget would be debated the following day and sent to the Appropriations Committee. Ministers would also be invited to present the defense budget before it is finalized and passed into law. Aliero commended the significant portion of the budget allocated to security, particularly defense, noting the importance of continued efforts against Boko Haram and banditry in various regions.
The senator also praised the focus on agriculture in the budget, especially the allocation for agricultural inputs and machinery, which he said was crucial for increasing domestic food production and reducing dependence on food imports. Aliero expressed concerns about the high level of debt servicing but acknowledged improvements in reducing the proportion of the budget dedicated to foreign debt.
Despite delays in the budget process, Aliero assured that government activities would continue under the extended 2024 budget, which runs until June. The 2025 budget is expected to be passed by January 31st or February 2025.
