Rep. Uchenna Okonkwo, representing Idemili North/South in the House of Representatives, has called for rigorous oversight of the 2025 federal budget.
He emphasized the importance of ensuring the proposed allocations effectively reach the masses and improve the lives of Nigerians. Speaking to the National Assembly New Media Forum after President Bola Tinubu’s budget presentation, Okonkwo highlighted both the positive aspects and challenges within the proposal.
“We must ensure that every line of this budget is scrutinized and implemented effectively,” Okonkwo stated. “Our role as legislators is to guarantee that the funds allocated for critical sectors, including education, health, infrastructure, and security, directly benefit the people.”
The proposed budget of 47.99 trillion naira, while an improvement over previous years, was noted to be relatively small when compared to the budgets of other nations with larger populations. Okonkwo acknowledged the budget’s merit but underscored the need for substantial reforms to make a real impact on the economy.
“Infrastructure and education are key to lifting the nation out of poverty,” he said. “We need to focus on these sectors, especially education, which was allocated 3.5 trillion naira.”
Okonkwo also expressed concerns about the trickle-down effect, questioning whether the budget would reach those in dire need. “The true test is whether the budget addresses the needs of the poorest Nigerians,” he added. The legislator assured his commitment to ensuring proper oversight throughout the implementation process.
