The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has shut down several rice shops and facilities involved in the production and distribution of counterfeit rice.

This major operation led to the seizure of goods worth ₦5 billion, as confirmed in a statement issued by the agency.

A total of eight rice facilities and a warehouse were raided in the Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. More than 1,600 bags of fake rice were seized, repackaged in well-known branded bags such as Big Bull, Royal Stallion, and Tomato Aposo. The operation also uncovered empty branded rice bags at the facility.

Following the raids in Nasarawa, similar operations were carried out at Wuse and Garki markets in Abuja. NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, directed the enforcement teams to focus on safeguarding public health, particularly during the festive season.

The counterfeit rice had been marketed under trusted brand names, deceiving consumers into purchasing substandard products. Mr. Kenneth Azikiwe, NAFDAC’s Director for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), warned counterfeiters to cease these illegal practices immediately.

Azikiwe further emphasized that those caught selling or distributing counterfeit rice would face prosecution. He added that the suspects arrested during the operation would be legally pursued to deter future offenses. The operation was aimed at ensuring public health is protected, especially as the holiday season approaches.

NAFDAC’s swift and firm action reaffirms the agency’s commitment to ensuring consumers are provided with safe and authentic products. The agency urged the public to report any suspicious activities related to food distribution networks.
