The election petition tribunal in Benin City has revealed that a total of 290 witnesses will testify during the ongoing governorship election petition case in Edo State.

This comes as Asue Ighodalo, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, challenges the declaration of Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the September 21, 2024 governorship election.

The tribunal, chaired by Justice Wilfred Ikpochi, disclosed that both the petitioners and respondents will call their witnesses as part of the trial process. The parties involved include Ighodalo, the PDP, Okpebholo, the APC, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Witnesses to Be Called in Phases

The tribunal outlined that the petitioners will call their witnesses within 21 days, with respondents having up to 10 days to present theirs. Justice Ikpochi emphasized that only witnesses whose statements on oath have been submitted and those subpoenaed will be called. The hearing is expected to proceed swiftly as the tribunal will not tolerate unnecessary delays.

Ikpochi also reminded all parties that any frivolous requests for adjournments will be rejected, stressing the importance of adhering to the time-bound nature of election petitions. To ensure efficiency, the tribunal will fast-track proceedings when necessary and will not permit any written addresses longer than 40 pages. Counsel are advised to observe proper brief writing as required by the Electoral Act, 2022.

Tribunal’s Hearing Schedule and Guidelines

The tribunal is set to sit daily starting January 13, 2025, except for Sundays and public holidays. The sitting period may be adjusted based on the volume of work, according to the tribunal chair. Justice Ikpochi also made it clear that there will be no consolidation of this petition with any other, nor will there be any amendments unless requested by the petitioners.

This announcement has intensified expectations as the political landscape in Edo continues to watch the proceedings closely. The outcome of this election petition could have significant implications for the state’s political future.
