The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a strong caution against the unorganised distribution of palliatives following deadly stampedes in several states.
Egbetokun’s warning comes after tragic incidents in Oyo, Anambra, and Abuja during the festive period. The IGP emphasized the public safety risks associated with such disorganized events.
Tragic Stampedes Across States
At least 35 children tragically lost their lives in a stampede at a children’s funfair in Ibadan, Oyo State. Many others were left critically injured in the chaos. In Anambra State, no fewer than 20 people died in a stampede during a rice distribution event aimed at helping the less privileged. The stampede occurred in the Okija community on Saturday.
A similar tragedy took place in Abuja, where an unspecified number of people died during the distribution of rice and food items at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, located in Maitama. The IGP expressed his deep sympathy to the families of the deceased, wishing a quick recovery to the injured.
IGP’s Strong Warning on Safety Measures
Egbetokun condemned the reckless organization of these events, highlighting the dangers posed to public safety. “Unorganized distribution of palliatives and relief items is a serious risk to public safety, especially during the festive period,” he stated. The IGP stressed the importance of proper planning and coordination in such activities to avoid further disasters.
He called on the police commissioners in the affected states to conduct thorough investigations into the stampedes. “We will not tolerate any negligence that leads to the loss of innocent lives,” Egbetokun added.
Call for Accountability and Coordination
The investigations aim to identify those responsible for the lack of safety measures during these palliative distribution events. The IGP reiterated that organizers must prioritize safety and work closely with law enforcement to prevent similar incidents.
