Multiple deaths have been reported in a stampede during a rice distribution event in Okija, Anambra State, on Saturday morning.
The incident occurred when a large crowd of residents, mostly women, gathered for the distribution of rice. Eyewitnesses say the situation quickly spiraled out of control, resulting in a chaotic scene with people struggling to escape the crowd.
Videos shared on social media show lifeless bodies lying on the ground while others frantically attempted to assist the victims. Some of the injured have been rushed to nearby hospitals, though their conditions are still unclear. Local authorities are yet to confirm the exact cause of the stampede, but sources suggest overcrowding played a major role.
Charles Aburime, the chief press secretary to the Anambra governor, confirmed the incident and assured the public that the state government is actively monitoring the situation. He added that an official statement from the governor’s office would be released soon, providing further details on the incident.
The stampede in Okija marks the second deadly mishap related to rice distribution in 2024. Earlier this year, a similar tragedy occurred at Nasarawa State University in Keffi, where several students were killed during a rice giveaway event. Just days before the Anambra incident, a stampede in Ibadan, Oyo State, claimed the lives of over 35 people, most of whom were children.
Authorities have not yet released an official death toll from the Okija stampede, though it is feared that the number of casualties could rise. Investigations are ongoing, and officials are urging residents to remain calm as more information becomes available. The community is still in shock, and many are calling for better organization and safety measures during public events.
