Tinubu Cancels Events in Lagos and Calls for Safety Measures
In response to the tragedies, Tinubu, who is spending the Christmas holidays in Lagos, expressed his deep sympathies. A statement from his Special Adviser on Information & Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the cancellation of events, including the Boat Regatta parade, scheduled at the President’s Ikoyi residence.
The suspension was announced just hours before the event was set to begin. According to Onanuga, the decision followed briefings on the tragic incidents, with the President opting to prioritize the victims and their families over scheduled public appearances. Despite dignitaries already being seated for the event, Tinubu decided to cancel his appearance, demonstrating his concern for the recent tragedies.
Tinubu also highlighted the disturbing similarities between the Abuja and Anambra stampedes and a recent incident in Ibadan, Oyo State. He emphasized the importance of adhering to safety protocols during events to avoid future tragedies. The President expressed condolences to the victims’ families and wished a quick recovery to the injured.
