The first 20 kilometers of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway will be inaugurated by President Bola Tinubu in May 2025.
Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, disclosed this during an inspection of the ongoing construction of the coastal road. He emphasized that the project is being constructed with safety and economic benefits for the people in mind.
Project Scope and Infrastructure Plans
The Minister assured that the contractor handling the project is working diligently to meet the deadline for phase one. Umahi explained that the road will consist of 10 lanes, including six major lanes and four service lanes. The road will also be equipped with 24-hour lighting, security posts, medical facilities, and other infrastructure aimed at enhancing its economic value.
Umahi noted that the Federal Government is acquiring land along the corridor to support infrastructure that will generate a return on investments. These improvements will not only enhance tolling but also stimulate economic activities along the route.
The Minister also addressed potential adjustments to the contract, including the construction of a retaining wall at certain locations. “We want to ensure that we enhance economic activities along the corridor, secure lives, and properties of our people,” he added.
The Minister provided further details on the progress of the project, explaining that the entire 47 kilometers will be divided into five sections for easier management. Section one, which covers 20 kilometers, is expected to be completed by May 2025. Additionally, section two will also see 10 kilometers completed by that time.
He reassured the public that continuous work is being done on the project, with the full 47 kilometers expected to be completed by the end of next year. Umahi also mentioned that the acquisition of land for the project has been completed, with over N18 billion paid in compensation to affected property owners.
In terms of funding challenges, Umahi revealed that some projects may be commissioned in phases to ensure progress. The Minister highlighted that the government is focusing on at least five key projects per zone, including the Sokoto-Zamfara-Kastina-Kaduna Highway and the Kano-Kastina Road.
