Vice-President Kashim Shettima has assured the families of victims of recent stampedes across Nigeria that the Federal Government will provide support.
He made the announcement on Sunday in a condolence message delivered in Abuja. Shettima expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of lives in the stampedes, which occurred during public events across the country.
The first tragedy occurred on Saturday in Okija, Anambra State, during a Christmas palliative distribution event. The stampede led to the deaths of at least 22 people. On the same day, a similar incident occurred in Abuja at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Maitama. Ten people were confirmed dead after a stampede at the church’s annual Christmas food-sharing event.
A third tragic event took place on Wednesday at the Islamic High School, Bashorun, in Ibadan, Oyo State. During a holiday fun fair, 35 children lost their lives in a stampede, and several others sustained injuries. These tragic incidents have raised concerns about crowd control and safety measures during such events.
In his message, Vice-President Shettima described the incidents as a national tragedy that has affected families across the country. He offered prayers and condolences to the families of the victims. Shettima also expressed his personal sadness, particularly over the loss of so many innocent lives, including children, who died in avoidable circumstances.
The Vice-President acknowledged the urgency of providing support to the affected families and ensuring their immediate welfare. He revealed that the Federal Government had directed relevant agencies to offer assistance to the victims’ families. Shettima promised that no effort would be spared in providing necessary aid to those affected by the tragedies.
“My prayers and thoughts are with the grieving families of all victims, including those undergoing treatment for injuries sustained,” said Shettima. He also prayed for eternal rest for the souls of the deceased. The Vice-President emphasized that the government is fully committed to helping the bereaved families through this difficult period.
In addition to the emotional support, Shettima stressed the need for better planning and organization at future events to prevent such tragic incidents. He said the government would work with local authorities and event organizers to implement safety measures that can help avoid future stampedes.
