Former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, is now a free man after fulfilling the bail conditions set by the Federal High Court.
Bello was released from Kuje Custodial Centre on Friday evening, following confirmation from Adamu Duza, the spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service, FCT Command.
Duza stated that Bello met all bail requirements, which included providing sureties with properties in high-value areas of Abuja, such as Maitama, Guzape, and Asokoro.
Bail Conditions and Legal Proceedings
The Federal High Court, presided over by Justice MaryAnne Anenih, granted Bello bail on Thursday, setting the amount at N500 million. One of the major conditions was the surrender of Bello’s international passport, restricting his movement outside Nigeria without permission from the court. The former governor is facing serious charges brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), including conspiracy, criminal breach of trust, and unlawful possession of property.
Release and Ongoing Legal Battle
Alongside Bello, two others—Shuaibu Oricha and Abdulsalam Hudu—are also accused, with all three pleading not guilty to the charges. The Controller of NCoS FCT, Ajibogun Olatubosun, was on hand to ensure the smooth release process. Despite the ongoing legal battle, Bello’s release signals a pivotal moment in the case that has garnered national attention.
