The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has categorically denied a viral claim that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, NPM, instructed citizens to assault police officers during stop-and-search operations.

The police force, through a statement issued by Police Spokesman ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi on Sunday, called the claim “entirely false” and without any factual basis.

The claim, which spread widely across social media platforms, falsely alleged that the IGP had directed citizens to physically attack officers and throw stones if approached during a routine phone search. However, the NPF quickly responded, dismissing the rumor as baseless and confirming that IGP Egbetokun had never made any such statement. The police force made it clear that the IGP is committed to promoting professionalism, accountability, and transparency within the ranks of law enforcement.

NPF Encourages Reporting Through Official Channels

ACP Adejobi emphasized that IGP Egbetokun has consistently encouraged citizens to report instances of police misconduct using the proper channels instead of resorting to violence. He reminded the public that the IGP has never issued a directive supporting or endorsing any form of physical assault on officers. Instead, he advocates for the responsible use of existing complaint mechanisms that are available to all Nigerians.

According to the police spokesman, Nigerians are encouraged to report any cases of police misconduct or inappropriate behavior through the Nigeria Police Force’s official channels, including designated helplines, social media platforms, and the police website. These platforms are set up to ensure transparency and accountability within the police force.

ACP Adejobi reiterated that the IGP’s focus remains on ensuring that any complaints against officers are handled professionally and legally. The police force is committed to maintaining a safe environment where both citizens and officers are held accountable for their actions. Adejobi added that the public should never take matters into their own hands but should instead work with the police to address grievances.

The police force also highlighted the importance of verifying information before sharing it with others. ACP Adejobi warned against the dangers of fake news, which can lead to confusion, misunderstandings, and the undermining of public trust in the police. He encouraged Nigerians to rely on verified and credible sources for information, especially when it pertains to the activities of the police.

The statement further assured Nigerians that the police are fully committed to a transparent relationship with the communities they serve. ACP Adejobi emphasized that the goal is to build trust and ensure that both the public and law enforcement can work together to uphold the law.

In conclusion, the Nigeria Police Force called on the public to stay vigilant, to refrain from spreading false claims, and to use the available communication channels to report any police misconduct. The police force remains steadfast in its mission to foster a positive and cooperative relationship with the people of Nigeria, working together for the common good.
