In response to the growing concerns of drug abuse among young people, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has launched a campaign in selected secondary schools across Calabar, Cross River State.

On February 19, 2025, at the West African People Institute (WAPI), in partnership with Devongnosis Education Limited and other key organisations, the initiative aimed to raise awareness among students about the dangers of drug abuse, empower them to make informed choices, and create student ambassadors to spread the message.

Dr. Eme Inyangabia, Assistant Director at NDDC, opened the event with a firm warning about the rising prevalence of drug use among secondary school students, reaffirming NDDC’s commitment to addressing the issue.

Nnadi Roseline Ada, Deputy Commander of the NDLEA’s Cross River State Drug Demand Reduction Unit, highlighted the link between substance abuse, mental health decline, and poor academic performance, calling for immediate action to protect young people’s futures.

A powerful testimony from a former drug addict, who shared his nine-year journey to recovery, left a strong impression on the students.

Attendees at the event called for the campaign to be expanded to more schools, emphasising the need for ongoing mentorship, follow-up programmes, and greater parental involvement. They also stressed the importance of improving rehabilitation services to support affected students in their recovery.
