No Rift Between Akpabio, Opeyemi — Senate

Amid swirling media reports suggesting a rift between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, the Nigerian Senate has firmly refuted any notion of discord within its ranks.

In a statement released on July 27, 2025, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, dismissed the claims of a clash during a recent executive session as “entirely false” and a misrepresentation of parliamentary tradition.

According to Adaramodu, the session in question was a routine deliberation on whether to proceed on the annual legislative recess. He emphasized that spirited debates are a normal and expected part of the Senate’s procedures and should not be misconstrued as personal altercations or power struggles.

“The Senate is a democratic institution where every bill and proposal undergoes thorough scrutiny,” Adaramodu stated. “Our debates are vigorous because we represent over 230 million Nigerians. Disagreements on policy are not signs of division but of a healthy democracy.”

He underscored that this open exchange of views is consistent with parliamentary practices around the world, where members use questions and interpellations to challenge and refine initiatives for the common good.

“There is no crack in our leadership,” Adaramodu affirmed. “Both the Senate President and Senate Leader remain united in their commitment to national progress.”

This reassurance comes as the Senate wraps up key legislative duties ahead of its scheduled recess. The statement aims to calm public concern and reinforce trust in the cohesion of the country’s top legislative body.
